How to customize your Google Chrome and Chromebook searches

October 29, 2017 - chromebook

I only reviewed a Google Pixelbook and we consider it’s good — though Chrome OS is many some-more singular than possibly macOS or Windows when it comes to customizing how a core OS works. One of my favorite collection on a Mac is called Alfred, a apparatus that pops adult a small hunt bar that can do fundamentally anything we can consider to module into it. we use it so many we have transposed my Caps Lock pivotal with it and when we use a Chromebook, we skip it terribly.

But! Chromebooks have a identical content box, it’s a Google hunt bar. But it’s not as absolute as Alfred when it comes to customizing stuff. Luckily, Chrome has a dark small underline that lets we customize how that hunt box works with opposite rules.

If we do a certain kind of internet hunt over and over again, customizing your hunt engines in Chrome can make that many easier. For me, obviously, it’s acid The Verge, though we also have tradition engines set adult for YouTube, Amazon, news from a past week, and a few some-more things.

So, for example, when we wish to hunt Amazon for something, we can only form “az battery” in my Chrome bar or in a Chromebook hunt bar and it only opens Amazon and searches for that thing.

Those customizations aren’t only singular to a Google hunt bar on Chromebooks. Basically, as prolonged as you’re logged into Chrome, your customizations for a hunt bar will sync opposite to any Chrome Browser you’re using. So either we use a Chromebook or only use a Chrome browser, here’s how to supercharge your searches for a things we use many often. (Note, however, that these settings don’t sync to Chrome on mobile nor to a Google app on mobile, that is annoying.)

Step One: find a Manage hunt engines setting

The initial thing we have to do is indeed find a damn environment we want. In Chrome, click a three-dot menu and go to settings, afterwards corkscrew down to “Search engine” and click on “Manage hunt engines.” You can also only form “engine” in a hunt bar during a tip of a settings, if we want.

When we click in, you’ll substantially see an positively bogglingly vast list of hunt engines listed. “Don’t we only use Google?” we competence ask. Yes, though here’s what Chrome is doing: it keeps an eye on a websites we revisit many and if it understands how to hunt those sites, it will eventually only supplement them to this list automatically.

What this list does is set adult a ability to do some-more than only “Google it.” So, for example, if we have visited 9to5Mac a garland and afterwards form “9to5Mac.com iPhone,” Chrome will extent that hunt to only that website.

Though it’s tempting, we do not recommend messing around with a “default search” section. You could, in theory, put some other hunt engine like Bing or DuckDuckGo in here, though generally vocalization we should leave it alone. But, now that you’re here, it’s time to get customizing a other engines.

Step Two: purify adult (or don’t)

This is an discretionary step, though we went by and manually private a ton of sites from this list, so we could have an easier time observant what hunt options we indeed want. You have to click a three-dot menu subsequent to any object and click “Remove from list” to discharge it.

But we don’t have to do this. For one, it’s irritating that Google adds a ton of sites here automatically, so it’ll take forever. For another, even after we do it, a garland of sites will get re-added later. Lastly, we don’t consider carrying a million of these tradition hunt engines in here hurts anything or slows anything down.

It’s only useful to see what you’ve got saved. Bluntly, Google’s collection for handling this things are so simple that you’re going to get angry during some indicate in this process. Just a satisfactory warning.

Step Three: do a exam search

Pick a thing we wish to hunt and then… go hunt a thing. For this example, I’m regulating Amazon. You only go to a website and form a hunt into a box. we suggest typing “test search” in.

One we do a search, go demeanour during a URL. Somewhere in that disaster of and # and % and whatever, we will indeed see your “test search” phrase. Amazon’s looks like this:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dapsfield-keywords=test+search

Now, go to that URL and revise it, right there in a browser URL bar, and change “test search” to “%s” (no quotes). “%s” is Chrome’s approach of observant “the hunt tenure goes here” for tradition searches. Don’t strike enter after we barter it, only put in %s and duplicate it, it will demeanour like this:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dapsfield-keywords=%s

Step Four: supplement your tradition search

Go behind to your “Manage hunt engines” shade and click add. There are 3 fields, here’s how they work.

Search Engine: This is a content you’ll see in a URL bar on a browser when we do a tradition search. Put whatever outline creates clarity to we here.

Keyword: This is how you’ll trigger your tradition search. Chrome customarily defaults to creation it a full name of a website, though that’s annoying. we always collect something short. So for Amazon, I’ve selected “az.” we have a ton of these, and we have grown a small complement for my codes so they’re easier to remember. I’m going to post a garland of my favorites during a bottom of this article.

URL with %s in place of query: That URL that we copied in a final step? Paste it here.

When you’re done, click save!

Step Five: Try it!

Fire adult a browser add-on or strike a hunt symbol on your Chromebook and try your new hunt out. Use space between your keyword and your hunt term. In a browser bar, as shortly as we strike space a bar should uncover a Search Engine name we chose. On a Chromebook, we won’t get that visible feedback, though it should still work.

Some of my favorite tradition searches

This apparatus has saved me a lot of additional keystrokes and time. I’ve set adult a garland of time-limited Google searches so we don’t have to manually puncture into a “Search Tools” field, for example. I’ve also set adult approach searches into a lot of other web services we use all a time. Here are only a few examples, as we can see we kind of finished adult environment adult a small complement to organisation them in my mind:

  • gm: a Google hunt that’s only singular to links from a past month.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%stbs=qdr:m
  • gw: a Google hunt singular to a final week
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%stbs=qdr:w
  • gd: A Google hunt singular to a final 24 hours
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%stbs=qdr:d
  • gh: A Google hunt singular to only a final hour
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%stbs=qdr:h
  • t: A Twitter search
    http://twitter.com/search?q=%s
  • tu: Open a form for a specific user
    https://twitter.com/%s

Something engaging we wish to indicate out about that final one: it’s not technically only a search. It’s only a URL. That means we can use this pretence to fast open any webpage where we know it has a non-static URL, though we don’t wish to worry with a bookmark for it. So if you’re a hardcore reddit user, for example, we could set adult a reddit by-pass to open adult a latest posts in a subreddit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/%2/new/

Because reddit has a flattering fast URL structure for a “New,” “Hot,” and “Top” sections, we could set adult a small complement to burst we directly into a territory that we want.

This is flattering tighten to what we do when we wish to burst to a specific place on my website, The Verge. The basis are a same for any URL and for many of a searches we competence do on a web: if we find yourself clicking a same damn buttons over and over again, it competence be easier to only set adult a keyword for it in Chrome. Give it a try!
